The reward of meekness

The Bible says that the meek will inherit the earth (Psalm 37:11 and Matthew 5:5). Meekness was the magic wand that made Moses very successful in his chosen career. If you want to be successful, you must be meek and if you are not, pray for it. Have you ever considered why God chose Joseph to be the earthly caretaker of our Lord Jesus Christ?

On September 28, 1996, I was ministering with Evangelist Gboyega Ajadi at Iree Polytechnic Gospel Student Fellowship and the Lord ministered to me and asked me this question, “Have you ever wondered why I see fit to use Joseph to care for the formative years? of Jesus Christ on earth?

The Lord revealed many qualities found in Joseph that qualified him for this privileged position, I will share some of them with you in this writing. In Matthew 1:18 – 25:

18. Now, the birth of Jesus Christ was in this way when, while his mother Mary was betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to have conceived by the Holy Spirit.

José suddenly discovered that although he had not met Maria, she was pregnant. This means that he had not had a deep intimate relationship with Maria that could have led to sexual intercourse. He did not know what had happened, we know it today because we have read it, and we have learned from the life of Christ; but back then, Joseph did not know what we know today. He did not know that the child in Mary’s womb was of the Holy Spirit. How many men today can bear that?

19. Then Joseph, her husband, being a just man (The Bible says that Joseph was a just man, he was meek and cold-headed and open to sound reasoning) and not wanting to make a public example of her, thought of putting her away . In private.

Some men today would be so angry that they would cut off his head, but while Joseph was thinking about it, an angel appeared to him in a dream to warn him. He did not seek confirmation, he only believed, he did not despise the dream, he did not demand to hear an audible voice or to see the angel physically in real life as Manoah the father of Samson. He just believed God, it was a simple faith. He did not quote the scriptures that “by two or three witnesses every word shall be confirmed.” He simply believed and obeyed the word or voice of God which turned out to be the perfect will of God.

How many people today are guided (through dreams) but reject the dream as a mere thought in their mind. Joseph was obedient to God, no matter if God spoke through a dream, an audible voice, a still small voice prophecy, a visit from an angel, or in any other way, he simply obeyed. He obeyed the angel that God sent him in the dream: this is meekness. No wonder God chose to use it to raise and nurture our Lord Jesus Christ in the flesh.

Joseph acted like God, by becoming the father of the Son of God, he was good enough to teach Jesus some basic things about life (humanity). When they went to Jerusalem when Jesus was twelve years old, Jesus went to the temple, ‘to be about my father’s business.’ They searched for him anxiously for three days. When they found him, Joseph did not raise his hand to hit or scourge Jesus, many men today would be so angry that the first thing they would do would be to slap that child. It was Mary who spoke and said:

“Son, why have you treated us like this? Here is your father and I have looked for you with sadness.” It is never recorded that José was ever angry (or lost his temper), he never overreacted to the situation. He was a man full of wisdom and understanding. Wisdom is believing in God even when you don’t understand what He is doing, saying, or planning. In Luke 2:50, the Bible says:

And they did not understand the words (of Jesus) that he spoke to them.

Joseph may not understand, but he believed God, but he did not mistreat Jesus, he loved Jesus for who he was: what a father, very much like Almighty God. In the same way, we are not called to understand everything about God or his Word, we are called to believe in Him and his word and that is true wisdom. In Matthew 1:25, we read

and he did not know her until she gave birth to her firstborn son; and he called her name Jesus.

José was disciplined enough not to have sexual relations with María, they lived together, slept together in the same house, but he did not. Everyone knows it’s okay to have sex with your pregnant wife, but Joseph didn’t. What kind of reward do you think José will receive? Think about the father of Jesus, who had the responsibility of caring for the Lord, he led an exemplary life, he was not getting drunk, sleeping with girls, lying, cheating, etc. He was meek and disciplined so that even God (I mean Jesus Christ) could learn from him how to be a good carpenter, he taught ‘God’ so many things in the flesh. He protected our Lord Jesus Christ, he took him to Egypt when Herod was looking for the life of the Savior. Meekness is the word that describes all of Joseph’s life. If you can show yourself a meek man, heaven and earth will see you and recognize you and reward you with resounding success in all your endeavors. If you study your Bible very well, you will understand that Joseph was a very successful carpenter. As Jesus’ fame spread far and wide, people marveled as recorded in Matthew 13:55

“Is not this the carpenter’s son?…”

José was the carpenter of his town, which means that he was the most important, the most popular and the most successful carpenter. Joseph through meekness was so successful that people traced Jesus back to him, why? This is because Joseph was notoriously successful, he couldn’t help but be noticed.

Some people are so successful today that no one remembers or recognizes their parents, because they don’t have successful parents. The father of Jesus was a successful father because of meekness, be meek. A meek man is too gentle to fight, he doesn’t know how to argue, he is so concerned with his purpose that nothing else matters. So, because of this ‘weakness’, God himself has to fight all his battles. The meek man cannot fight: God fights for him. If you can fight and take revenge on your enemies, God didn’t need to fight for you. Moses did not fight any man who rose up against him in rebellion, God did. Even when his older sister, Miriam, misbehaved with him, God had to teach her a lesson for seven days that she does not work with a meek man. When you see a meek man, be afraid because God himself is the one who fights for him. So why not pray for the spirit of meekness now?
