Ace Ventura: Pet Detective (Movie Review)

Jim Carrey’s lead role, Ace Ventura, is one of the funniest films of the 1990s. Written by the former In Living Color screenwriter himself, the film centers on a main character investigating the disappearance of pets. If you enjoy Jim Carrey humor (and it’s not for everyone), then you’re going to love Ace Ventura. A little more mainstream than Dumb And Dumber, he’s less ridiculous in concept (with the exception of a man employed as a pet detective). If you know how to laugh, you’ll have a hard time avoiding it while watching Ace Ventura: Pet Detective …

Jim Carrey stars as Ace Ventura, a Miami-based “pet detective” who has an unusual knack for interacting with animals of all kinds. For the most part, Carrey spends his days searching for lost and stolen pets. But when the Miami Dolphin mascot goes missing, Dolphin’s main office enlists Ventura’s help in finding the culprit.

With the help of Melissa Robinson (Courteney Cox), a Dolphins employee, and Emilio (Tone Loc), a friend of law enforcement, Ace searches all of Miami in an effort to recover the kidnapped dolphin. But on the way, he collides with Lt. Lois Einhorn (Sean Young) of the Miami Police Department. When Ace discovers that the master criminal is a former member of the Dolphins’ last championship team, he must discover the identity of the person if he hopes to find the mascot (leading to one of the funniest sequences in the film, when Carrey follows former players, looking for a ring with a lost stone). However, the stakes in the investigation increase when the same author kidnaps Dan Marino before the Super Bowl. Now, it’s up to Ace Ventura to save the football season for the Miami Dolphins …

Long before his other starring roles, Jim Carrey burst onto the Hollywood radar with this cult classic. Ace Ventura is absolutely ridiculous, but the movie thrives on Carrey’s unique talents. Since Robin Williams doesn’t have a comedian of such limitless energy and ability to make it to the big screen. Ace Ventura showcases the best of Carrey’s talents and accurately embodies (he wrote it) his realm of humor. The film’s hero’s constant antics create a nice comedic exchange between Carrey and Young as their two characters fight each other.

Bizarre and over the top, Ace Ventura hit the big screen as a unique rarity that many have tried to replicate ever since. But few actors have the multi-talented talents of Jim Carrey, and that makes Ace Ventura a rare movie. Unlike Wayne’s World, this is a 90s comedy that hasn’t lost its comic luster over time. It’s just as much fun today as when it was first released, if not more fun. It’s this timeless quality of his comedy that makes Ace Ventura: Pet Detective a must-see movie …
