Shampoos for Seborrheic Dermatitis

Seborrheic dermatitis is an inflammation of the skin that generally affects the scalp. The most common symptom of this problem is the presence of layers of dry scales that itch and cause redness of the skin. There is no exact known cause or cure for seborrheic dermatitis. However, the use of medicated shampoo has been found to be effective in reducing skin inflammation. These shampoos contain antifungal, antibacterial and anti-inflammatory ingredients that help prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi and yeast on the skin and thus control this problem.

Seborrheic dermatitis shampoos contain ingredients such as salicylic acid, zinc pyrithione, coal tar, sulfur, selenium sulfide, or ketocanozale. These ingredients help remove scales from the scalp and prevent the re-formation of these scales. The ingredients also reduce the itching and redness associated with flakes.

Some of the shampoos for seborrheic dermatitis are

Neutorgena T- Gel

The main ingredients of this shampoo are Neutar’s 2% solubilized coal tar extract and sodium laurel sulfate. Since coal tar is photosensitive, you should refrain from being in the sun immediately after using this shampoo. Shampoo can also cause discoloration of colored hair. The efficacy of this product is good and people report relief even with the first wash.

Nizoral AD Shampoo

Nizoral contains 1% ketoconazole, which kills the fungus that causes the scales and thus helps control seborrheic dermatitis. The shampoo should be used twice a week or as directed by the doctor. Some people suffering from hair loss due to dandruff and sebrroheic dermatitis have reported a marked reduction in hair loss after using this shampoo.

Selsun Blue Shampoo

This shampoo has 1% selenium sulfide to control dry and flaky skin. The shampoo should be used twice a week. You should keep the shampoo on your scalp for at least 5 minutes to get good results.

Sebulex shampoo

Contains salicylic acid and sulfur to help control flaking and itching. The shampoo should be used once or twice a week. It should be kept on the scalp for a few minutes for it to show results.

Intensive care head and shoulders shampoo

This shampoo has 1% selenium sulfide. This prevents flaking and also removes the flakes present on the scalp. The redness and itching of the skin due to seborrheic dermatitis is also reduced with regular use of this shampoo. The shampoo has the correct pH and does not damage or dry the hair. Even people with colored hair can use the shampoo.

All of the seborrheic dermatitis shampoos mentioned above are effective in reducing flaking and itching. However, great care must be taken to prevent the shampoo from coming into contact with the eyes. In addition, you should rinse your hair well with water so that no shampoo residue remains on the scalp, otherwise it may aggravate your problem. Pregnant and lactating women and people prone to allergies should consult their doctor before using these shampoos.
