Overcome communication challenges

Has your tongue ever seemed to be disconnected from your brain, especially at a crucial moment in time? Have you ever ruined a deal, job interview, promotion, or relationship because you just couldn’t think of the right words to say? We have all experienced these embarrassing moments at one time or another.

You can easily overcome anxiety, expand your abilities, and empower yourself for success. Decide to do it now.

Know what you mean. Begin with the end in mind. Listen carefully when someone else is speaking, and then take a moment to formulate your thoughts before you begin to speak. There may be a moment of silence; that’s fine.

Get to the point quickly. So it’s easier for the listener to remember what you said. Provide supporting details using descriptive language, if applicable. Most people think in images, not words. Help them understand your meaning.

Take responsibility for your communication skills. Don’t blame others for not understanding what you mean. If your listener is puzzled, ask “Am I not saying this clearly?” Instead of “Don’t you understand what I just said?” Restore your message using different words. Eliminate misunderstandings as quickly as possible.

Respect the other person’s point of view, even if it differs profoundly from your own. This is especially important in an election year. Disagree without being disagreeable. If we all had the same point of view, some of us would be unnecessary!
