4) Ay, my cuckoo, I’ll let you go if you don’t sing.

The above are songs, describing different personalities of 4 historically famous local gentlemen. All of them are deeply involved in the unification of Japan in the 16th century. The first describes Ieyasu Tokugawa, who opened the Shogun Government and stabilized a new system. The second is that of Hideyoshi Toyotomi, who established a new system, security and protection. The third is in Nobunaga Oda, who destroyed the old regime and planted a new system.

Let’s talk about 3), first. Nobunaga was the one who destroyed the old regime and introduced a new system. He showed no respect for the religions that controlled politics in his day. He fought against the established powers and authorities and destroyed them. This song shows his strong will and power to carry out his strategy. He didn’t mind killing the cuckoo if he didn’t follow his order.

2) describes Hideyoshi Toyotomi. He was a high-level subordinate of Nobunaga. Nobunaga hired him when he was the son of a farming family. Hideyoshi became one of Nobunaga’s most influential generals when Nobunaga was assassinated. Nobunaga always gave him hard work. Hideyoshi always managed the hard work. Song 2) describes his confidence that he could accomplish any difficult plan.

Song 1) explains the personality of Ieyasu Tokugawa. Ieyasu was a smart strategist and a determined fighter. Unfortunately, however, in his early days, he always had people of higher rank than himself, Nobunaga, and Hideyoshi. He was patient in waiting until his time came. After the deaths of Nobunaga and Hideyoshi, he made a move and became a Shogun to complete the unification of all of Japan in 1603. He was a person with patience and perseverance.

Everyone played their own role in history when the period was chaotic from the old regime to the new. It should be noted here that Nobunaga’s speed and Hideyoshi’s confidence couldn’t prevent Ieyasu from being the ultimate winner unifying all of Japan. Ieyasu has a sense of time to know if it is a tailwind or a headwind for him. He had the patience and stamina to wait until his time came. His song teaches people to be patient in difficult times.

Finally, song 4) describes Mitsuhide Akechi. Mitsuhide was also a high ranking Nobunaga officer. He couldn’t bear for Nobunaga’s behavior to ignore and destroy the old traditions of Japan. He did not like Nobunaga’s forceful approach against his enemies. He betrayed and killed Nobunaga. He is a traitor, but the song describes his compassionate side.
