Jobs – Tips for applying for a job

Apply for a job

There are four general methods of applying for a job, including:

(1) mail your resume,

(2) email your resume,

(3) fax your resume, and

(4) hand delivery of your resume.

Send your resume by mail

Some companies prefer that you send your resume by mail. For this type of approach, it’s best to include a cover letter with your resume. The cover letter is a basic letter that describes the position you are interested in and some details of your qualifications and skills. It is basically your entrance to it. Before you write your cover letter, you need to know who the letter is addressed to. You never want to start a cover letter with “Dear Sir or Madam” or “To Whom It May Concern.” It shows that you have not prepared yourself and that you are not looking for a specific position in your company, but any job that you can get your hands on. Basically, it’s disrespectful to your potential employer.

Email your resume

Emailing resumes is becoming a common way for recruiters to obtain resumes. Attach it as a Word document or PDF file. These are the most common formats and what most companies will accept. The subject line should read: Smith, John (Accounting Position). This makes it easy for the recruiter to know who the email is from and what it is about. It also ensures that your email will be read. Sometimes there are specific methods to approach an emailed resume. Some companies have certain subject line requirements (so follow them!). If the company wants you to paste it, don’t send attachments because your email will be deleted immediately.

Fax your resume

You will need to include a cover letter when you fax your resume. If you are not using your own fax machine, be sure to include your own contact information. The rules for your cover letter are the same as for sending it by mail.

Hand delivery of your resume

You will want to dress appropriately, as you would for an interview. Companies usually ask you to do this if you will be working directly with clients. They ask for a walk-in because they want to take a look at your washcloths right away. Sometimes the employer will give you a short on-site interview to see if they require a formal interview later. So stay on your best and most appropriate behavior. Also, walk-ins do not require you to bring a cover letter with your resume. Your appearance is off the cover letter. Sometimes you will also be asked to complete an application form. Smile and be courteous, no matter who you’re talking to.
