You have made a decision. You’ll get serious about getting fit and building muscle to achieve that physique you’ve always dreamed of. So now you’re thinking, “Should you invest in a home gym?” Well, there are advantages of home gym and there are disadvantages of exercising at home.

Immediate costs

The immediate cost of a home gym is clearly a disadvantage when it comes to working out. Although it may be cheaper in the long run, it can be difficult to come up with the $400 – $1000 to buy a home gym outright.

This can be more difficult than paying the $30-$40 monthly costs of a gym membership. You can try to ease the cost of a home gym by searching for used equipment in the classifieds or at garage sales. But it may still be more profitable in the short term to buy a gym membership.

Another obvious downside to working out at a home gym is that you won’t have the variety of equipment you’d find at a fitness center. So you’ll have to make do with whatever equipment you have on hand and try to get the best possible workout at home.

You will usually find better equipment in a gym. This is especially true for isolation exercises when you start looking to tone your muscles after you’ve bulked up.

Entertainment

This third handicap may not be a hindrance for everyone, but it may be for others. Sometimes just being home can make you feel lazy. We often think of the home as a place to relax after a hard day at work.

So if you stay in that mode when you work out, it can be all too easy to take a break every few minutes to watch the game, eat something, or have a drink. Now don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with breaks. You need rest between sets for most workouts, but can sometimes overdo it.

When you work out in the gym, on the other hand, you can feed off the energy of those around you and even be motivated by the people in the gym who are where you aspire to be.

However, the opposite can also be true. Sometimes people get distracted at the gym. Those people are the ones who spend more time socializing at the gym than exercising. So this one can go both ways.

So deciding if you want to invest in a home gym is not a clear answer. There are home gym advantages, but there are also some disadvantages of exercising at home to consider. Immediate costs, lack of equipment variety, and in-home distractions are some to consider.
