Gears of War 3 – Review

Publisher: Microsoft Game Studios, Developer: Epic Games, Genre: Third-Person Shooter, Release Date: September 20, 2011, ESRB: Mature, Systems: Xbox 360.

Gears of War 3 is without a doubt the best developed Gears game in the franchise. Whether you’re talking about the story, visuals, sound design, multiplayer, or general content. Gears of War 3’s presentation stands out above its predecessors. You’re sure to experience those classic and weird Unreal Engine physics glitches, like Locust’s legs wiggling and sticking out of walls or the ground. I find the ladder to be just finicky and doesn’t carry any real weight when it comes to the flaws in this great game. Gears of War 3 is presented with a practically flawless level design and an unprecedented pace in its main game. Please note that you can play the entire story campaign online with up to four players.

Gears of War 3’s story begins two years after the sinking of Jacinto. He living in a huge military ship called Raven’s Nest. Some of the COGs, including Marcus, Dom, Anya, Cole Train, Jace Stratton, and Baird, made a living. Former President Prescott, who hasn’t been heard from since the Jacinto sinking, shows up with a message for Marcus and the story finally begins. It is a message from Adam Fenix (Marcus’s father) who was feared dead but is alive and is being held captive by Queen Myrrah (leader of the Locust).

The message Marcus receives from his father relates to the emulsion and its effects killing Sera. The emulsion is a natural fuel resource unique to the planet Sera, or so we all thought. Adam Fenix has a way to stop the emulsion from destroying the planet. You guessed it, Marcus has to save his father again and this time the planet depends on it. From here, the COG, including Marcus, Jace, Dom, Anya, Cole, Baird, Sam, and Carmine, embark on an epic adventure.

The Unreal Engine 3.5 was masterfully used by its creator to create one of the best console games out there. Keep in mind, I’ve played hundreds of video games this generation and there are quite a few jaw-dropping moments in Gears of War 3. The Cole Train zip line scene was excellent. I thought it was a scene until I saw a reticle on the screen. Shooting Locust on a zip line was a lot of fun. Act 3: Chapter 1 The Unbreakable boss battle with Lambent Berzerker was visually stunning. The glow of the emulsion as it was filtered created a visual light show.

The musical score and orchestral melodies were memorable and fitting for each key moment in the game or scene. All the voice actors, particularly the guys from previous games, did their best work in Gears of War 3. The actors who voiced Marcus, Dom, Cole, and Baird in particular. Dizzy and Anya were good too. The screams of the Lambent humans yelling “Kill me” were haunting and creepy. The sound effects of weapons, enemies, and even subtle walking were taken with extreme care. If I didn’t write it before I will now, the sound design in Gears of War 3 is the best in the series.

Nothing new or innovative as far as gameplay is concerned. You still shoot and stay in cover. What I can say from playing Gears of War 3 is that it’s the most fun of all its predecessors, and it beats innovation any day of the week. The Vulcan Cannon is a two-man Gatling gun that adds cooperation to a weapon’s operation. One lights the ammo and one points and fires. It is a deadly powerful weapon. I loved. Butcher Cleaver adds melee combat to Gears of War 3. The Cleaver is a huge blade that butchers used to cut Rock Worms in the Hollow. It is a deadly weapon to use in the story campaign or Horde Mode 2.0.

The single player campaign lasts between fifteen and twenty hours. There is a single player arcade mode not to mention four player co-op. It seemed short in all seriousness because of its epic (pun intended). Whether you play Versus, Beastmode, or Horde 2.0, you’ll have a blast. Multiplayer is deep with unlockables like weapon skins, characters, executions, and avatar prizes. Oh, did I mention that this is hands down the best Gears of War multiplayer release ever? This. Dedicated servers work wonderfully. I’ve never had so many double murders where me and the other guy kill each other at the exact same time. Say goodbye to delay. The multiplayer mode is the best in the series from top to bottom and sideways. In my opinion, it has the most content and the most fun to play.

Gears of War 3 is the reason that innovation in video games is overrated in many cases. When you hone your franchise like Epic Games did with Gears of War 3, nothing else really matters. Gears of War 3 is a divine game. It’s not the best game ever made, but it’s the best game available for Xbox 360 in my opinion. Gears of War 3 gets my highest rating for a complete retail game on this site. Thank you for reading.
