ACN has a business model that allows distributors to join for a fee and bring customers into the company by offering them to friends and family. This was an absolute stroke of genius on the part of the founders. Instead of paying for advertising like traditional telecommunication companies do. ACN actually charges $499.99 for a distributor to become active within their company. Once activated, they actually make money by recruiting other dealers and attracting customers for the services. Distributors cannot market buying services, they must only talk to friends and family for customer acquisition. When a distributor enrolls a new distributor, he can earn a portion of the enrollment fee by helping the new distributor qualify. The qualifications change regularly, but they do involve acquiring a certain number of customers within a certain time frame. If this qualification is not met, the registration fee is transferred directly to the company.

That’s what makes this business model so great. I don’t know what the percentage of new distributors actually qualify, but I’m sure based on the success figures for network marketing as a whole, it’s not very high. Which means that ACN makes a significant income as a result of the failure of new distributors. Although the opportunity is there for everyone to do well, this fact still makes me a little suspicious.

To help new distributors get started, ACN teaches what are now considered old-school methods, using hotel meetings and home meetings to introduce people to the opportunity. The problem I found with this was that there is no alternative for new distributors. They live or die by this method. There are many more tools to use to build a business in this day and age. Obviously, the World Wide Web is a huge asset that can help many people build a business.

In general, I consider ACN to be the provider of reasonable services. The business opportunity in my opinion is decent with the possibility for some to make money. However, many will fail and I think ACN is well aware of this and actually counts on it for a certain portion of their revenue. For this reason, I would seriously look elsewhere if I wanted to start a home based business. I’m sure you’ll find better opportunities than ACN.
