World of Warcraft – How to Get the Kirin Tor Non-Combatant Familiar Vanity Pet Companion

One day in Dalaran I saw someone with a rare and absolutely adorable companion pet that looks like a smaller ice blue version of the Voidwalker.

By hovering over the vanity pet, I managed to read its name, so I could learn more about it. He was called the Familiar of the Kirin Tor.

All you have to do to acquire this special companion is to find and read eight books that appear in Dalaran. That doesn’t sound so difficult, does it?

Get higher achievement in learning

The eight books that you have to find and read are part of the achievement called “Higher Learning.” Not only do you get the achievement, but as a reward, you will also receive a book. Then by using this book, you can get the Familiar of the Kirin Tor.

A friend of mine showed me in the game where the eight books would appear, and every time I was in Dalaran, I would make the journey to search for these particular books.

The tricky thing about books is that they only appear every 3-4 hours and if someone reads the book, it will only be visible for three minutes. If the book is not read, it will be visible for five minutes and then disappear again.

Fake books will appear randomly in the same places, but will not be part of the achievement.

The route around Dalaran to find the eight books

Since my main character is from the Alliance, I started my route with the first place I came to, after turning right outside the inn.

You must enter the Dalaran Visitor Center and immediately to the right next to a table, and in front of the right chair, a book may appear on the floor. Read it if it’s called “Arcane Magic Schools – Abjuration.”

Then you go out again, continue to the left, cross the street and enter the Violet Bastion. Turn left and, at the end, you will see some squares. A book can appear in the box in the corner. If the name of the book is “Schools of Arcane Magic – Illusion”, you have the correct name.

Exit Violet Hold, turn right, cross the street and enter the Violet Gate. Look right on the floor near a bookshelf and if there is a book called “The Schools of Arcane Magic – Introduction” there, then read it.

The next stop is the Legerdemain Lounge. Inside, and to the right of the bar, you will see some shelves. The one on the right is usually empty, except when this particular book is there: “The Schools of Arcane Magic – Transmutation.” Read it when you find it.

Go up the stairs and in the second room on the right, there is a bookcase next to two chests. This bookshelf will generally appear empty, unless a book has appeared. I hope it’s “Arcane Magic Schools – Necromancy”.

Outside again, continue left, cross the street and go up the stairs to the Violet Citadel. On the first floor, you need to check the bookshelves on the right. The book will appear to the left of the two shelves at the bottom alongside the other books. This particular book should be “The Schools of Arcane Magic – Conjuration”.

Go up higher and turn left. Look for “Arcane Magic Schools – Divination” on the floor between the two bookshelves.

Then go outside again, stop at the top of the stairs and study the balcony of the house on the opposite side of the road. Hover your mouse over the boxes on the left and if you see the name “Arcane Magic Schools – Enchantment” appear, run to “The Threads of Fate”, go upstairs and out onto the balcony, and then read the book.

The final steps to obtain the familiar of the Kirin Tor

When you have found and read all eight books, you will receive an email with a book called “The Schools of Arcane Magic – Mastery”. If you right-click on it, you will be transported to a library in one of the tallest towers in Dalaran. There is a man there and if you talk to him he will give you the pet.
