Smart travel tips for smart travelers

Traveling to a foreign country is not as easy as it sounds. You need to put in a lot of planning and foresight to get it right every time, every time. There may be times when you have to find cheap flights and tickets and pack your bags at any time and for that you have to be prepared for any requirement. As a general rule of thumb, try to avoid going to destinations plagued by droughts, floods, civil strife, or war, even if it means skipping some exotic destinations.

One of the first things to do is scan all your important identity documents like passports, driver’s license and save them in your email account. These would be very useful in case of theft or loss of luggage. Take special care with your luggage and personal belongings. It would be advisable to keep your wallet and other personal documents in your carry-on luggage and not in the checked baggage ballast, as it could get lost.

Carrying too much cash in person may not be a good idea. It would be much better to carry internationally valid credit and debit cards for purchases abroad, as most of them come with a purchase protection guarantee. Traveller’s checks have also proven to be very convenient for tourists. Convert and keep a substantial amount of local currency in your wallet, as it will save you the hassle of carrying bundles full of cash.

Rising fuel costs have forced international airlines to impose restrictions on the amount of luggage passengers can carry. And that is why it is advisable not to carry too much luggage. Keep plenty of silk clothing, as you can pack more in a limited space.

Avoid wearing jeans as they take too long to dry or if you have some old clothes that you want to dispose of, you can take them with you. This will ensure that you have more space in your suitcase to carry gifts and souvenirs back home. You can reward local people for their help by giving them clothes that you no longer want to wear. You may like to have some clothes in your closet made from fabrics produced in a foreign country.

Once you land in your destination city, you need to find out where the taxi rank is, or better yet, arrange for a hotel pick-up to make sure you don’t get lost in an unfamiliar city. Staying in a reputable guesthouse or star category hotel would help, as that would ensure that you are not only safe, but also get the best food and amenities in an unknown land.
