paint a nude woman

The dividing line between porn and art is thin, but there is a line. Painting a nude woman is an expression of love for God.

Introduction of my uncle

My uncle Parduman died last year. He was 88 years old. The sad part was that he died unrecognized and unannounced, even though he was a painter of some repute. Sadder was the fact that he left his family at the age of 80 and returned to Mumbai to paint. But he couldn’t recover and he died alone. I wish I had been there to help him, but he was gone before I knew of him. My memory of him is of a vibrant painter who once took me to a nude painting class.

It was a wonderful experience when the nude model posed in front of about 14 artists, including 2 girls, while each one drew her. The nude model had her thighs crossed and I felt that she was a bit self-conscious. But over the years I’ve been wondering why painters have been painting nudes.

naked and naked
While we were in school, our art teacher, Mr. Paul, once took us to an exhibition of paintings by the famous painter Roerich, a Russian. What caught my eye were the large paintings of nude women that adorned the exhibit. Being an amateur painter myself, I drew a nude of a sleeping woman. Unfortunately, it may be in a loft in my house.

The charm of painting a nude woman cannot be described. It differs from a naked woman, which somehow looks a bit unpleasant. But the Greeks and our own ancient artists presented the nude woman. Most of the Goddesses of the Hindus have been carved nude in temples, so I wonder what the fuss is about Hussein’s paintings.

Naked women and beauty
The fact is that a naked woman is an object of beauty. Therefore, a painter will try to capture that beauty. One has to see the paintings of Goya, Picasso and DalĂ to realize this. But remember that nude paintings are not for the voyeur. They are basically an expression of art. Maybe at some point love and sex will also be a part of this, but that is what Tantra and Acharaya Rajneesh have been talking about.

Last word
For my part, I respect the artist’s point of view. My friend an art teacher at the Art School commented ‘ Look, it’s just an expression of innermost feelings. I’ll leave it like this. However, I have one last observation. Remember that painting a nude woman is serious business and perhaps that is the reason why all nude paintings never show women smiling. Did you ever think about that?
