Description: The Lakeland Terrier is a small and robust dog with square proportions. They are similar in appearance to the Welsh Terrier. This breed, however, is smaller, the head is rectangular, and the muzzle and nose appear strong. Their nose is black and may be liver-colored, with liver-colored fur. This breed has small V-shaped and folded ears. The eyes are oval and small. Their teeth are at a level edge-to-edge level, slightly overlapping scissor bite. With sturdy front legs that are straight when viewed from the front. The tail of this dog is cut off, in countries that allow it, and is set high. This breed has a double coat, the outer coat is rough and wiry and the inner coat is close to the skin, this is smooth.

This breed is generally cut into the body fur, to exaggerate the head, muzzle, and legs. The colors we see in the fur are black, liver, red, blue, and wheat, all of which are solid colors. This breed also comes in saddle markings, where the second color is seen on the back of the neck, back, and tail. Their height does not exceed 14½ inches, with the weight of dogs around 17 pounds and female dogs around 15 pounds. This breed lives for around 12 years and has been recorded to live up to 16 years.

History: This breed dates back to 1800, and is one of the oldest terriers, still here today. The gene pool of this Terrier is a mix of the Old English Wild Hair Terrier and the Bedlington Terrier, this was a working dog and was used to prevent vermin from destroying crops and disturbing herds. The Lakeland Terrier, would chase a fox or badger to their dens, on any terrain, forests, fields and water. The idea is to chase down and ultimately kill their prey. This dog was recognized as the breed in 1921 and by the AKC in 1934. The Lakeland Terrier is still used as a hunting dog, companion, and show dog. Some of the talents this dog exhibits are tracking, guard dog, and hunting.
