Violeta Barrios de Chamorro was president of Nicaragua from 1990 to 1997. She was the first elected female president of the Third World. She is the widow of Pedro Joaquín Chamorro, assassinated in the 1970s. In 1990, Violeta Barrios de Chamorro became the first Democrat president in Nicaraguan history.
